I enjoy the big events.
I like the build up, the promotion and the hype surrounding them.
I don’t care what you say about being burnt out from this or that, the two issues I have read from Marvel’s latest blockbuster, Siege, have proven “event” comics are where its at.
With both issues, Siege hits hard.
With Ares, damn hard.
I’ll say unfortunately, because this character has really grown on me. I don’t think I am alone in saying that either. With Dark Avengers and his DR mini, Ares has been one of the few who have really shined (pun intended) for me during Dark Reign. Just in case you missed those, as we saw in Siege #1, there has been a lot of build up surrounding Ares. I didn’t want to believe this was leading up to the god of war’s fate, but it was always in the back of my mind and comes to no surprise. They could have went the other way and really gave him a push. Too bad, as I was hoping to see more from the god of war, especially in this series. Always the possibility we might down the road, so I am hoping for something more from Marvel. Good stuff.
The man with the power of a million exploding suns.
Wow.
Where to begin?
I’ll say, I think its fitting that the character who has recently received as much build up as Ares, was the one responsible for taking him down. That was nicely done, sure intentional, but well delivered none-the-less. Olivier Coipel did an amazing job here of giving us that tension and suspense that was so deserving of a battle such as this. It was awesome. We get the result of that “clash of the titans,” in a two page spread that was just jaw dropping. “Caught on film,” mind you as well. Epic.
We all know Siege is leading up to the Heroic Age as Marvel has been sending out images and such. With this issue we get more of that as Captain America Steve Rogers rallies the troops. I haven’t been following the Reborn series, but with this issue Captain America is back. Glad to see that. That last page was excellent. Couldn’t have been done better. In addition, we get some “heroic” scenes from Maria Hill which exemplifies this. My only gripe being that no one noticed a beat up truck coming at them? Maybe not in the heat of the battle plus all the attention was on Thor, still, I thought that was a bit hard to swallow. However, the Dark Avengers make up for it by sending Daaken after them. Speaking of which, this has to be building up to Thor vs. Sentry II, as Thor does a little of his own house cleaning. Correct me if I am wrong, but the only thing that has ever defeated The Void has been the Void/Sentry himself. Can’t wait to see how this turns out in the pages of Dark Avengers and Siege.
Love him or hate him, there is no denying that Brian Micheal Bendis has given us two very good comics. With the execution of Bendis, coupled with the rendering of Coipel, Siege is turning out to be a mega event worth talking about for years to come. I’m excited and can’t wait for the next issue.
