STORY: Jesse Young
ART: Alexander Marutian
Warning: Contains Spoilers
“A Trick For A Trickster” is part of the Wakefield's Journal - collection of short stories that enable the fine folks at Saint James Comics to try out various artists which can be found on their site every month.
This one takes place in Japan with a demon casting a spell on the villagers, their deepest desires surfacing. Wakefield, being the veteran demon hunting paranormal sleuth, recognizes the problem and proceeds to vanquish the foe.
I liked how writer, Jesse Young, showed Wakefield to be the experienced old-timer. Not only in his knowledge of the occult, but also his fighting skills as he takes out his partner, the young Hollander, who has also come under the spell of the demon. Wakefield is shown to be calm and cool, like he has done this many times over, which adds credibility to the story.
The art by Alexander Marutian was pretty good which reminded me of Japanese ancient art which definitely worked and I did like the layouts. I did get confused when Wakefield was on the roof and slipped, though it could be just the review pdf as I had to look over that sequence a few times. I think the little demon jumped over Wakefield’s head? Maybe adding some darker shading here and there would help.
Wakefield and Hollander are definitely growing on me as Jesse Young and company are giving us an intriguing and fun tale with Ex Occultus. Plus, these Wakefield's Journal are quite enjoyable as we get to see the work of many different artists.
